ADHD Task Switching: Why Your Brain Locks On the Next Event

Switching tasks means closing one mental context and loading another — and with ADHD, that operation is expensive and lossy. Your brain knows it. So when a meeting is coming, it pre-emptively refuses to open a new context at all: better to idle than to pay the switch cost twice. That's why the brain “locks on” to the next event hours early.

The switch cost, itemized

Every switch has three parts: unloading the current context (what was I doing? where do I resume?), the transition itself, and loading the new one. ADHD working memory drops things in transit — the resume point, the half-formed idea, sometimes the reason for switching. An abrupt “meeting now!” interrupt maximizes the loss, which is why unplanned transitions feel jarring and planned ones get dreaded.

Lock-on is switch avoidance

Seen through the switch-cost lens, waiting mode is rational: if opening a task before the meeting means paying a full unload/reload cycle, the brain economizes by staying idle. It isn't broken — it's minimizing a cost that really exists. The fix isn't to deny the cost but to lower it.

Staged transitions lower the cost

A staged countdown — wrap-up signal at T-15, move signal at T-5 — turns the switch from a cliff into a ramp. T-15 starts the unload gently: finish the sentence, write the resume note, save. T-5 is pure motion, nothing left to decide. With the exit ramp guaranteed, the brain will open a context in the gap, because closing it no longer threatens to be a crash stop.
