Why you hover all day before an appointment
“I can't start anything, I just hover until my 4pm appointment.” If one scheduled thing later in the day puts your whole morning into a holding pattern — near-ready, clock-checking, unable to commit to any task — you're not lazy and you're not alone. Hovering all day is the lived-experience name for ADHD waiting mode, and it has a mechanism, a real cost, and a fix.
What hovering all day looks like
The appointment is at 4pm. It's 10am. And yet: you can't start the report, because what if you get absorbed and lose track of time? You can't run the errand, because what if it takes longer than expected? So you do neither — you hover. Half-starting things, abandoning them, drifting back to the clock. The day passes in a state of readiness for an event that is still six hours away. It's the same pattern the community calls waiting mode.
Why the ADHD brain does it
Two systems are behind the hover. First, working memory standing guard: because ADHD makes intentions unreliable at resurfacing on their own, the brain compensates by holding the appointment in active memory all day — and that guard duty occupies the exact mental workspace that starting a task requires. Second, anticipatory anxiety: the low hum of “don't miss it, don't be late” keeps the body in a readiness state that makes deep engagement feel dangerous. Add time blindness — the difficulty of feeling how long six hours actually is — and hovering is the rational move: if you can't sense time passing, staying near-ready is the only strategy that feels safe.
The cost math
A one-hour 4pm appointment shouldn't cost more than an hour plus travel. But if the hover starts at 10am, it costs six hours of guard duty for one hour of commitment. Stack three appointment days into a week and most of the working week disappears — not into the appointments, but into the waiting before them. That's why the fix isn't a better schedule. The schedule was never the problem; the guarding was.
The fix: externalize the clock
The hover exists because your brain doesn't trust anything else to watch the time. The fix is to give it something it can trust, so it can stand down:
- 1. Know the gap. Name the open window out loud: “It's 10am, the appointment is at 4pm, I have a 5.5-hour gap.” A vague “later today” keeps the guard on; a concrete gap gives it edges.
- 2. Pick one safe-to-start task. Choose something that fits the gap and can be paused if needed — not the deep-focus project that punishes interruption. One task, written down, is a decision the hovering brain doesn't have to keep re-making.

You can run this with two phone alarms and a sticky note — genuinely. The alarms are the hard stop, the sticky note is the safe task. The manual version's weakness is that you have to remember to set it up for every gap, every day, which is its own prospective-memory tax.

Why does an abrupt single alarm not work for ADHD?
One alarm at 'leave now' still leaves the whole gap unprotected — your brain knows the alarm won't help it wrap up, so it keeps guarding the clock anyway. A staged countdown works better: a wrap-up signal at T-15 lets you close the task gradually, and a move signal at T-5 handles the transition. Once the brain has experienced that the two-stage stop actually catches it in time, it can release the hover.
